Gwent Police have provided an update on the incident where a man reportedly armed with a crossbow was shot by armed officers in Newport. The 21-year-old local man remains in a stable condition in hospital, according to a statement released on Tuesday afternoon.
Officers responded to a call at a house on St Edward Street at 11:55 PM on Friday, July 10, 2026. Upon arrival, they encountered a man in possession of a crossbow. During the response, the man was shot by officers using a police-issued firearm. He received immediate first aid at the scene before being transported to a hospital for treatment.
Arrest and Investigation
Following the shooting, the man was arrested on suspicion of affray, threats to kill, and possession of an offensive weapon. A police spokesman confirmed: “He is currently under police custody at hospital as inquiries continue.” Gwent Police have made a mandatory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), which will conduct an independent investigation into the use of force.
Deputy Chief Constable Nicholas McLain addressed public concerns, stating: “We understand this matter may cause concern, but I want to reassure the public that it was isolated and there is no wider or ongoing risk; we are not looking for anyone else in connection with this matter.” He emphasised that firearms incidents are rare in Gwent and that officers are trained to respond proportionately to threats.
Police Statement on Use of Firearms
McLain added: “Our firearms officers are highly trained and held to the highest standards. The discharge of a police firearm is always a last resort and only occurs where there is a significant threat to officers, the individual involved, or members of the public. They do an incredibly difficult job, often making split-second decisions in high-pressure situations, and I commend those who voluntarily take on that responsibility.”
Police are appealing for any witnesses or anyone with information, including CCTV or dashcam footage, to contact them on 101 quoting log reference 2600220612. Alternatively, information can be provided anonymously to Crimestoppers.
