Indonesian authorities have apprehended a Scottish man identified as a high-ranking member of an international criminal organization shortly after his arrival on the popular resort island of Bali. The arrest was executed based on an Interpol Red Notice, highlighting global law enforcement cooperation.
Arrest at Ngurah Rai International Airport
The 45-year-old suspect, named Steven Lyons, was taken into custody by immigration officers at Ngurah Rai International Airport in Bali on Saturday. He had flown into the island from Singapore, according to official statements from Indonesian Interpol chief Untung Widiyatmoko.
The immigration system automatically flagged Lyons as the subject of an Interpol Red Notice that had been issued at the request of Spanish authorities. A Red Notice serves as an international alert for police worldwide to arrest a suspect pending extradition proceedings.
International Criminal Allegations
Lyons is wanted in both Spain and the United Kingdom in connection with serious organized crime activities, including drug trafficking and money laundering operations. Widiyatmoko confirmed that Lyons will be extradited to Spain on Wednesday, where he faces prosecution.
The Scottish national has been on Spain's wanted list for approximately two years, following his alleged involvement in a murder case that occurred there in 2024. Bali Police Chief Daniel Adityajaya emphasized that the arrest resulted from a joint investigation involving Spanish and Scottish police forces.
Global Crime Network Investigation
According to Widiyatmoko, Lyons is alleged to have led a sophisticated criminal ring that utilized shell companies for money laundering across multiple regions. The network reportedly operated in Europe and the Middle East, with connections to Spain, Scotland, England, Dubai, Qatar, Bahrain, and Turkey.
Last week, coordinated police raids were conducted in Scotland and Spain as part of the investigation into Lyons' criminal activities. These operations resulted in multiple arrests and involved collaboration with Europol—the European Union's law enforcement cooperation agency—as well as authorities from Turkey, the Netherlands, and the United Arab Emirates.
Violent Background and Family Connections
Scottish media reports indicate that Lyons survived a 2006 shooting incident in Glasgow that tragically killed his cousin. Following this violent episode, he relocated to Spain before eventually settling in Dubai within the United Arab Emirates.
In a further development last May, Lyons' brother and an associate were shot and killed in what authorities suspect was a gangland shooting at a beachfront bar in Fuengirola, located in southern Spain. This incident underscores the violent nature of the criminal networks involved.
Companions Remain at Large in Bali
Lyons arrived in Bali accompanied by two companions who are believed to still be on the island, according to Bugie Kurniawan of Bali's immigration office. Spanish Interpol has identified these individuals as members of the same criminal cartel, though they are not currently subject to any arrest warrants.
The successful apprehension of Steven Lyons demonstrates the effectiveness of international law enforcement cooperation through Interpol mechanisms. The case continues to develop as authorities work to dismantle the broader criminal network allegedly led by the detained Scottish national.
