An officer with US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) fatally shot a Mexican father-of-three during a traffic stop in Houston, Texas, on July 8, 2026. The incident occurred around 6:50 a.m. local time when the agent attempted to stop the vehicle as part of a targeted enforcement operation, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
Details of the Incident
The driver, identified as Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, allegedly tried to evade arrest by ramming an ICE vehicle and attempting to run over an officer. The DHS statement said the officer fired his weapon in self-defence after the driver refused to follow multiple verbal commands and weaponised his vehicle. Salgado Araujo was struck and transported to a hospital, where he died from his injuries.
Salgado Araujo’s son, Ronaldo Salgado, told The Washington Post that his father had been in the US for over three decades and worked in construction to support his family. “My father did not deserve this,” he said.
Investigations Launched
Homeland Security has launched an investigation into the shooting, while FBI Houston is conducting a separate probe into the alleged assault on a federal law enforcement officer. The DHS confirmed that the enforcement operation targeted an illegal alien.
Context and Reactions
The shooting has drawn comparisons to the fatal shooting of Renée Good in Minneapolis, which sparked backlash against ICE. Under the Trump administration, ICE has intensified operations in major cities, including Houston, as part of mass deportation efforts. Houston, the largest city in Texas, has a population of about 6.5 million, with 24% Hispanic residents according to census data.
Immigrant communities have expressed fear and concern over increased enforcement actions. The incident continues to fuel debate over immigration policies and use of force by federal agents.
