Five members of a criminal gang have been sentenced to a total of more than 36 years in prison for the kidnapping and brutal torture of a 38-year-old man in a case that shocked authorities. The victim was subjected to a sickening campaign of abuse, including force-feeding, sexual assault, and being terrified by agitated dogs, during an ordeal that spanned multiple locations across county lines.
Details of the Kidnapping and Torture
The horrific incident began on April 26 last year at approximately 12:20 pm, when a neighbour alerted police after witnessing the man being abducted by two or three individuals wearing balaclavas in broad daylight. An immediate investigation was launched by the Surrey and Sussex Major Crime Team, highlighting the severity of the crime from the outset.
Sequence of Events and Locations
The victim was first taken to an address in Reigate, Surrey, where he was blindfolded and force-fed against his will. At this location, two dogs were deliberately agitated to instill fear and make him believe they would attack him, adding psychological torment to the physical abuse.
He was then transported to Farnborough, Hampshire, where the torture escalated into a prolonged physical assault and sexual assault. The following day, his brother began receiving a series of threatening calls demanding payment for the victim's release, further compounding the family's distress.
Arrests and Police Intervention
At around 4:30 pm on the day after the kidnapping, officers from Hampshire Constabulary successfully located the victim at the Farnborough address, bringing the terrifying ordeal to an end. Four of the perpetrators—Levi Burton, Lorna Swyer, Tarelle Thompson, and Reece Armstrong—were arrested at the scene.
Further police enquiries identified Sebastian Love as the individual responsible for making the demand calls. He was subsequently arrested and charged, completing the roundup of all involved parties.
Sentencing and Charges
The gang members faced a six-week trial at Guildford Crown Court, where the full extent of their crimes was laid bare. The sentences handed down reflect the gravity of their actions:
- Reece Armstrong, 30, from Staines-upon-Thames, was found guilty of conspiracy to kidnap, Section 18 assault occasioning grievous bodily harm with intent, and two counts of possession of an offensive weapon. He received a nine-year prison sentence, to run consecutively with an unrelated five-year sentence imposed in July 2025.
- Tarelle Thompson, 28, from Croydon, was found guilty of conspiracy to kidnap and possession of an offensive weapon. He was jailed for nine years and will serve a further five years on licence.
- Lorna Swyer, 21, from Dorking, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to kidnap and common assault. She was sentenced to three years and four months in prison.
- Sebastian Love, 21, from Merton, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to kidnap and was handed three years and four months imprisonment.
- Levi Burton, 31, from Leatherhead, was found guilty of sexual assault following the trial and had already pleaded guilty to conspiracy to kidnap, false imprisonment, and assaulting a police officer. He received 12 years imprisonment and five years on licence, and will be on the Sex Offenders Register for life.
Police Response and Statements
Senior Investigating Officer, Detective Chief Inspector Kimball Edey, commented on the case, stating: 'As soon as we became aware that a kidnap had taken place, officers worked at pace to locate the victim as quickly as possible. He was located the day after he'd been kidnapped, and had been subjected to what amounted to torture at the hands of Armstrong, Burton, Love, Swyer, and Thompson.'
Edey added: 'No one should have to endure the ordeal they had put him through and the sentencing today has ensured they will spend a long time in prison, where they belong.' This statement underscores the commitment of law enforcement to bringing such perpetrators to justice and providing closure for victims.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the brutal realities of organised crime and the importance of swift police action in protecting public safety and upholding the rule of law.
