Barbie Designer Murder: Italian Businessman Killed in Suspected Mafia Hit
Barbie designer killed in suspected mafia hit

In a shocking incident reminiscent of organised crime executions, Italian businessman Mario Paglino – known for his involvement in the iconic Barbie doll's design – was found dead in Rome with multiple gunshot wounds.

The 68-year-old entrepreneur, who ran a successful plastics company supplying Mattel, was discovered in his car in the affluent Parioli district, with forensic evidence suggesting a professional hit.

The Barbie Connection

Paglino's company, Irplast, played a crucial role in developing materials for the famous doll during the 1980s and 1990s. His business partner Gianni Grossi confirmed their firm had worked closely with Mattel on Barbie's production.

"We revolutionised the plastic compounds that made Barbie's hair more durable and her limbs more flexible," Grossi told investigators.

A Brutal Execution

Police found Paglino's body in his Mercedes with five bullet wounds – three to the head and two to the chest – a signature of mafia-style killings. The execution occurred just 200 metres from his home.

Investigators are exploring multiple motives:

  • Possible links to Calabrian organised crime groups
  • Business disputes in the plastics industry
  • Personal vendettas

Rome's Rising Crime Wave

This murder adds to growing concerns about organised crime's influence in Italy's capital. Just last month, another businessman was killed in similar circumstances.

Authorities have launched a major investigation, with anti-mafia prosecutors taking over the case. Forensic teams are scouring Paglino's business records and personal connections for leads.

The victim's family has requested privacy as they mourn the loss of a man described as "a visionary in plastics technology who brought joy to millions of children worldwide."
