Two Teenagers Arrested Following Arson Attack at Kenton Synagogue
Two teenagers have been arrested in connection with an arson attack at a synagogue in Harrow, according to the Deputy Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Service. The incident occurred at Kenton United Synagogue around midnight on Sunday, when a bottle containing an accelerant was thrown through a window.
Details of the Attack and Arrests
Deputy Commissioner Matt Jukes confirmed on Monday morning that a 17-year-old boy and a 19-year-old man were arrested overnight. He stated, "I'm really pleased to say that overnight, we have news of two arrests in relation to that incident, 17 and 19-year-old males." The Community Security Trust (CST) reported that the attack caused minor smoke damage to an internal medical room but resulted in no injuries or significant structural damage.
Broader Context of Targeted Attacks
This incident is part of a concerning series of attacks targeting Jewish premises in London. Deputy Commissioner Jukes revealed that police have made 15 arrests over recent weeks in relation to six separate incidents, including attacks on Jewish-led ambulance services and a Persian media organisation. Chief Rabbi Sir Ephraim Mirvis condemned the arson as "cowardly" and warned that "a sustained campaign of violence and intimidation against the Jewish community of the UK is gathering momentum."
Investigation and Political Responses
Counter-terror police are investigating whether these arson attacks have been carried out by Iranian proxies. Deputy Assistant Commissioner Vicki Evans noted that the incidents have been "similar in nature" and that most have been claimed online by Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamia, also known as Hayi. Video footage allegedly published by the group shows an individual in dark clothing throwing an incendiary device at the synagogue before fleeing.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer expressed his outrage, stating on social media, "I am appalled by recent attempted antisemitic arson attacks in North London. This is abhorrent and it will not be tolerated. Attacks on our Jewish community are attacks on Britain." The synagogue's rabbi, Yehuda Black, confirmed that the item was thrown into the medical room, highlighting the targeted nature of the assault.
