Two teenagers have been arrested in connection with an alleged arson attack at a synagogue in north-west London, as police probe potential ties to Iranian-backed groups amid a broader series of incidents targeting Jewish sites.
Details of the Incident
The incident occurred at midnight on Sunday at Kenton United Synagogue in Harrow, where a bottle containing an accelerant was thrown through a window. This caused minor smoke damage to an internal room, but no injuries or significant structural damage were reported, according to the Community Security Trust, which monitors antisemitic attacks in the UK.
Arrests and Wider Investigation
A 17-year-old boy and a 19-year-old man have been arrested following the attack. Deputy Commissioner Matt Jukes confirmed that these arrests are part of a wider investigation into 15 arrests linked to six separate incidents. These incidents have targeted Jewish premises, a Jewish-led ambulance service, and a Persian media organisation, raising concerns about coordinated efforts against the Jewish community.
Police are actively investigating potential connections to Iranian-backed proxies in relation to these recent attacks. This development underscores the heightened security risks faced by Jewish institutions in London and across the UK, prompting increased vigilance from authorities and community groups.
Community Response and Security Measures
The Community Security Trust has emphasised the importance of robust security protocols at synagogues and other Jewish venues in light of these events. While the damage from the Harrow attack was minimal, it highlights the ongoing threats and the need for continuous monitoring and preventive measures to protect vulnerable communities.
As the investigation continues, police are urging anyone with information to come forward, stressing the seriousness of such attacks and their impact on community cohesion and safety.
