Second Melbourne Man Charged Over Alleged Arson Attack on Adass Israel Synagogue | Court Appearance
Second Man Charged Over Melbourne Synagogue Arson

A second man has been charged in connection with a deliberately lit fire at a Melbourne synagogue, as Victoria Police continue their investigation into what is being treated as a targeted antisemitic attack.

The 32-year-old from Caulfield North faced Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, following the alleged arson incident at the Adass Israel Synagogue in St Kilda East during the early hours of 15 July.

Emergency services were called to the synagogue on Balaclava Road after reports of flames engulfing the entrance. Firefighters managed to contain the blaze, which caused significant damage to the building's exterior and entranceway.

Coordinated Attack and Community Impact

This arrest marks the second in the case, following the earlier charging of a 14-year-old boy. Police allege the attack was premeditated and coordinated, with both accused allegedly involved in planning and executing the fire.

The incident has sent shockwaves through Melbourne's Jewish community, already on high alert following a significant rise in antisemitic incidents globally since the onset of the Israel-Hamas conflict.

Serious Charges Laid

The man has been charged with engaging in conduct with the intention of encouraging another person to commit a terrorist act, a serious offence that reflects the gravity of the alleged crime. The 14-year-old co-accused faces charges of arson causing destruction and criminal damage by fire.

Police will allege in court that evidence, including CCTV footage, directly links both individuals to the scene at the time the fire was started.

Community and Official Response

Leaders from the Adass Israel Congregation have expressed their devastation but also resilience, vowing not to be intimidated by acts of hate. The incident has been condemned by state and federal political leaders across the political spectrum.

Victoria Police have reaffirmed their commitment to protecting all religious communities and have increased patrols around places of worship as a precautionary measure. The investigation remains ongoing.
