Arizona Ramadan Crescent Moon Vandalised on Tempe Mountain
Ramadan Crescent Moon Destroyed on Arizona Mountain

A 15-foot crescent moon, meticulously crafted by students to honour the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, has been found completely destroyed atop an Arizona mountain. The City of Tempe announced the vandalism on Tuesday, revealing that the symbol, which had been reinstalled on A Mountain just years ago after a two-decade absence, was discovered in ruins.

Symbol of Faith and Community Vandalised

A student group designed and built the 15-foot-tall crescent moon to illuminate the holiday for the entire community, stated the city in a post on X. It stood on A Mountain, where religious symbols of other faiths, such as Christmas wise men, Easter crosses, and Hanukkah stars, have historically been displayed. The city emphasised, There is no place in our community for this kind of hate. People of all faiths are welcome in Tempe and they have the right to feel safe and be safe.

Investigation and Damage Assessment

According to Tempe police, the damage is estimated at approximately $20,000, and an investigation has been launched into the incident. The crescent moon, a key symbol of Ramadan representing spiritual renewal, prayer, and reflection, was positioned 1,000 feet above downtown Tempe. This year, it was erected as Ramadan began on February 17, with the holy month set to conclude on Thursday, followed by weekend celebrations.

Collaborative Effort to Restore Representation

The structure was reinstated in 2023 through a partnership between the Arizona Muslim Alliance, the shura council for Arizona mosques and Muslim nonprofits, and the Muslim Student Association at Arizona State University. It had not been seen on the landmark for 20 years prior. Volunteers, donors, and the Authentic Grain Woodworking construction company contributed to its creation.

Wid Alsabah, then president of the Muslim Student Association and a biomedical engineering student, noted on Facebook, We couldn't help but notice the absence of the Islamic crescent for Ramadan, which left us feeling disappointed due to the lack of representation. The project aimed to make the display an annual tradition, fostering community support and inclusivity.

Impact on Local Muslim Community

Local residents expressed profound significance in seeing Islam represented in the mainstream. Sumaya Abdul-Quadir, involved in the project, wrote on Facebook that it was the first time she felt seen in her 18 years of life. My hope is that, with something like this crescent, we can set the stage for American Muslims to be seen, accepted and celebrated as a part of this country, she stated.

Heightened Security Measures

In response to rising tensions, possibly linked to geopolitical events such as conflict in Iran, Tempe officials had already increased security around places of worship before the vandalism occurred. Patrols are set to continue throughout the holiday season to ensure safety. The city concluded its statement by affirming ongoing conversations with faith leaders of all religions to maintain peace and safety throughout Tempe.

Ramadan, a sacred time for Muslims marking the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, involves worship, reflection on the Quran, charitable acts, and fasting during daylight hours. The destruction of this symbol has sparked condemnation and calls for unity, highlighting the importance of religious tolerance in the community.
