A Michigan synagogue has publicly released photographs on social media depicting extensive fire damage that resulted from a violent incident last week, where an armed man crashed a pickup truck into the building before taking his own life.
Synagogue Shares Images of Destruction
Temple Israel, located in West Bloomfield Township near Detroit, posted the photos on Thursday, March 19, 2026. The decision to share these images came after other unauthorized pictures circulated in the media, which the synagogue stated caused significant distress to survivors of the attack.
In a Facebook post, the synagogue emphasized, "This is our sacred space, and we will be the ones to tell its story." The photos reveal blackened walls, exposed ceilings, and loose wires in hallways, along with ruined celebratory photos and uneaten snacks left on tables from the midday assault.
Details of the Attack
The incident occurred on March 12, when Ayman Ghazali, a 41-year-old naturalized U.S. citizen, rammed his pickup truck through a synagogue door after sitting in the parking lot for two hours. He struck a security guard, and security staff exchanged gunfire with him before he killed himself.
According to the FBI, Ghazali's truck contained commercial-grade fireworks and several jugs of gasoline. No children or other staff members were injured during the attack, which took place near an early childhood education room.
Investigation and Motive
The FBI has not yet determined a motive for the attack. However, Ghazali's ex-wife contacted police in Dearborn Heights around the time of the incident to warn that he appeared distraught and suicidal. Ghazali had recently lost family members in an Israeli airstrike in Lebanon on March 5.
The synagogue's release of the photos aims to control the narrative and provide a firsthand account of the damage, highlighting the community's resilience in the face of tragedy.
