Kitten Survives Horrific Ordeal After Being Thrown from Moving Vehicle in Melbourne

A six-week-old kitten is now recovering in foster care with a fractured pelvis, while another kitten remains missing, after both were violently hurled from a moving car in Melbourne's western suburbs. The rescued kitten, named Dorothy, survived this traumatic event thanks to the quick actions of a passing motorist who found her injured on the roadside and rushed her to the emergency department at Lort Smith Animal Hospital.

Good Samaritan Witnesses Disturbing Act of Cruelty

Emma, the Good Samaritan, and her partner were driving along St Albans Road when they witnessed the car ahead of them roll down its window before two cats were thrown onto the road. Chief veterinarian Dr Jessica Wilde explained that with traffic moving at approximately 60 km/h and nothing but hard pavement beneath them, the kittens' chances of survival were devastatingly slim.

Emma didn't hesitate. She braked immediately and pulled over, finding one of the kittens, now named Dorothy, terrified, hissing, and in obvious pain, Dr Wilde said. Another driver stopped to help search for the second kitten, but tragically, they couldn't be found. It remains unknown what happened to the other kitten.

Dorothy Shows Remarkable Strength in Recovery

Despite the horrific ordeal, Dorothy is displaying incredible resilience. Amazingly, little Dorothy is proving to be quite the fighter, and we are doing everything we can to help her pull through, Dr Wilde stated. The six-week-old kitten suffered a fractured pelvis but is now receiving urgent care and is being lovingly looked after in foster care by one of the hospital's nurses, where she can finally rest, recover, and begin to feel safe.

Lort Smith nurse Jordan, who is caring for Dorothy, shared: She is such a beautiful little girl, and despite her terrible start to life, is getting stronger every day. We will make sure to stay by her side and give her all the love and care she needs to get through this traumatic event.

Veterinarian Condemns Unjustifiable Cruelty

Dr Wilde expressed difficulty in understanding how someone could be so cruel to a defenceless creature. It's hard to make sense of something like this, she said. But what we do know is that there is never an excuse. If you're unable to care for an animal, there are always safer, more compassionate options, including surrendering them to a shelter or veterinary clinic. She emphasized that Dorothy is incredibly lucky to be alive.

Public Outrage and Community Response

The heartbreaking story has sparked horror and outrage among Australians online. One commenter wrote: Hope someone has found other kitten and that it is getting attention it needs too. Humans can be so cruel. Another added: How could somebody think of doing that let alone actually doing it. Not only is it cruel, but knowing somebody will see you together with cameras everywhere.

This incident highlights the importance of responsible pet ownership and the availability of humane alternatives for those unable to care for animals. The community's swift response and the dedicated care from veterinary professionals offer a glimmer of hope amidst this act of senseless cruelty.
