A 96-year-old Jewish woman was brutally attacked in New York, leaving the community in shock as authorities swiftly arrested a suspect in what is being treated as a hate crime.
The elderly victim, identified as Thelma, was walking near her home in Normandy when she was allegedly struck by a man who shouted anti-Semitic slurs. Witnesses reported the assailant fled the scene but was later apprehended by police.
"This was a cowardly and despicable act," a police spokesperson stated. "We are treating this as a hate crime and will ensure justice is served."
Local Jewish leaders have condemned the attack, calling for increased security measures to protect vulnerable members of the community. "No one should live in fear because of their faith," said one community organiser.
The suspect, whose identity has not yet been released, is expected to face multiple charges, including assault and aggravated harassment as a hate crime.
