A Jewish teenager has become the victim of a horrifying suspected hate crime in the coastal town of Bournemouth, spark a major police investigation and widespread condemnation.
The 17-year-old was walking along Christchurch Road on Tuesday afternoon when he was allegedly targeted in what community leaders are describing as a deliberate antisemitic attack.
The Disturbing Incident
According to Dorset Police, the victim was approached by two individuals in a silver SUV-type vehicle at approximately 4:15 PM. In a shocking escalation, one of the occupants produced an airgun and fired it at the teenager, striking him.
The situation took an even more sinister turn when the perpetrators allegedly showed the victim a crudely drawn swastika symbol, leaving no doubt about the motive behind the attack.
Community Outrage and Police Response
Rabbi Ari Naham of Bournemouth Hebrew Congregation expressed his horror at the incident, stating: "We are deeply shocked and saddened by this attack on a member of our community. There is no place for such hatred in our town."
Dorset Police have launched a full investigation, treating the incident as a hate crime. Detective Inspector Mark Jenkins emphasised the seriousness with which they are treating the case: "We are conducting extensive enquiries and are following several lines of investigation. This was a terrifying experience for the young victim and we are providing him with all necessary support."
Appeal for Information
Police are urging anyone with information to come forward, particularly those who may have witnessed the silver vehicle in the area around the time of the attack. The force has increased patrols in the area to reassure the local community.
The incident has sent shockwaves through Bournemouth's Jewish community, with local leaders calling for unity and condemning all forms of religious hatred.
This attack comes amid growing concerns about rising antisemitism across the UK, with community groups calling for stronger action against hate crimes targeting religious minorities.
