A Green Party council candidate arrested on suspicion of antisemitic social media posts has been seen canvassing in south London, prompting Labour to accuse the party of failing to take the issue seriously.
Sabine Mairey, who was arrested by the Metropolitan Police on Thursday, was pictured on Sunday campaigning in Clapham alongside other party activists. The Greens declined to comment due to the ongoing police inquiry, but it is understood Mairey is under investigation and likely to be suspended.
Party rules state that candidates under suspension or investigation should not campaign. A party source said the central party was unaware of Mairey's canvassing and would remind her of the rules. The other arrested candidate, Saiqa Ali, has already been suspended.
Labour's Steve Reed, the housing and communities secretary, said: "The Green party is rotting from the head down. Shame on Zack Polanski’s moral cowardice. No apology, no condemnation and no suspension."
Polanski, the Green leader in England and Wales, who is Jewish, told the BBC: "As a Jewish person, those comments disgust me. It’s important that we let the disciplinary process take its place." He rejected claims of a particular problem within the Greens, adding he disowned candidates who made such comments.
