A British couple is facing up to 30 years in prison after being arrested in Istanbul on suspicion of attempting to smuggle two suitcases of cannabis into the United Kingdom.
Arrest at Istanbul Airport
Holly Cooper and her boyfriend Taylor Johnson, both aged 20, were detained at Istanbul Airport while they were heading to their connecting flight back to London. The pair had arrived on a flight from Thailand before being intercepted by Turkish authorities.
Following their arrest, they were placed in a holding cell where, according to sources close to Taylor's family, he was assaulted by other inmates. They have since been transferred to a different prison facility. However, it could take up to a year before their case goes to trial, and they do not have private legal representation, instead being assigned a public defence team.
Legal Consequences
If convicted, the couple faces a minimum sentence of between 10 and 30 years in prison. Friends and family are now attempting to raise funds to cover legal fees, as the families anxiously await updates on the case.
Family and Friends React
A family friend described the couple as "good kids" who made a mistake. Speaking to The Sun, the friend said: "OK, they’ve done something stupid this time, but everyone makes mistakes. They’ve been recruited and groomed by bigger criminals and exploited by them. They are alone in a Turkish prison. It’s shocking and apparently Taylor has been beaten up. The families are in bits."
Official Support
A Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) spokesperson stated: "We are providing support to two British nationals detained in Turkey as well as their families, and are in touch with local authorities."
The case highlights the serious risks involved in drug trafficking and the severe penalties that can be imposed under Turkish law.
