Emiliane Tamara Nunes Carvalho, 24, was rescued by police from a property in Águas Lindas de Goiás, Brazil, after allegedly being held hostage for five days by her ex-boyfriend, Ailton Rodrigues de Souza. Officers found her chained by the neck, tied to a mattress with ropes and handcuffs, and reported that she had difficulty breathing.
Discovery and Rescue
Carvalho was reported missing on August 17 after her family said she failed to return from a doctor's appointment. Police broke into the home after receiving reports about her disappearance, with clips shared online showing officers cutting their way into the property and kicking down the door to a back room.
In the footage, the woman can be seen shaking as she is tied to a mattress with several ropes and chains, with a mask and a gag attached to her face.
Suspect's Arrest and Seized Items
Police became suspicious of Souza after his own family reported him as missing too. He was arrested on the day Emiliane was found. According to police, the suspect staged his own disappearance to divert attention away from himself, and they allege he kidnapped her because he refused to accept her breaking up with him.
After raiding the home, officers seized a 9mm pistol, sedatives, and items used to restrain the alleged victim.
Victim's Condition and Allegations
Carvalho has since been released from hospital and posted on social media on Saturday that she is still recovering from her injuries. She claimed she is still under medication and that her wounds had affected her ability to see. She also alleged she had been assaulted inside the property and that her ex-partner used burning cloths to torch her skin.
The investigation continues.
