A convicted rapist described as an "untreatable psychopath" was active on an Edinburgh dating website in December 2023, four months before he was remanded for a ten-year campaign of abuse against two partners.
Amadeusz Giers, 39, attacked two women between 2014 and 2024 in Edinburgh, subjecting them to extreme surveillance and psychological abuse. He was convicted of the offences and sentenced to an Order for Lifelong Restriction at the High Court in Livingston.
Dangerous criminal on dating site
A source told the Daily Record: "Giers is an extremely dangerous man and any woman he comes into contact with is at risk. The fact that he was stalking dating sites for females during his offending just shows he wanted to attack more women."
Specialist risk assessors concluded he should never be freed, describing him as an "untreatable psychopath". His name has now been added to the Sex Offenders Register, and he was banned from contacting his victims indefinitely.
Judge's warning
At the High Court in Livingston, judge Susan Craig sentenced Giers to an Order for Lifelong Restriction with a nominal punishment of six years. She made clear the number was academic, given the high risk he poses.
She said: "You lack insight into your entrenched attitudes - and behaviours are resistant to intervention. The assessor highlights your deceptive behaviour towards your criminal justice social workers, and that you act subversively, engaging in extreme levels of surveillance of your ex-partners, beyond the control of managing authorities."
She added that the assessor described Giers as having "complex personality traits with a high prevalence of psychopathic personality characteristics and dysfunction, together with traits of Antisocial Personality Disorder and Borderline Personality Disorder."
Details of the abuse
Giers' first victim suffered between July 2014 and August 2018. He raped and attempted to rape her, isolated her from family and friends, and hid a tracker in her car to monitor her movements. He also set up a fake dating profile to target a male he believed his partner was speaking with.
Between April 2019 and April 2024, he subjected a second woman to more extreme violence and threats. He placed covert recording devices in her home and refused to let her walk her dogs without him. He also raped her at knifepoint in April 2024, despite being bailed in February of that year not to approach or contact her.
Continued harassment from prison
Judge Craig noted that Giers showed no insight into his offending and saw himself as the victim. She said: "You are described as someone who has a profound lack of concern or empathy for the victims with your only concern being for the injustice you perceive results from your convictions."
She added that despite being locked up, he continued to harass his victims from jail. "Over time you have repeatedly failed to comply with monitoring arrangements and persistently breached rules, acting in an intimidating, harassing manner towards victims even when non-harassment orders were in place," she said.
She concluded: "I am satisfied that the offences of which you were convicted form a pattern of behaviour such as to demonstrate an enduring propensity seriously to endanger the physical or psychological well-being of the public."
Detective Sergeant Barry Carlin, from Police Scotland, said: "Giers subjected two women to years of horrific abuse, causing lasting trauma and having a profound impact on their lives. I would like to acknowledge both the victims and the strength they showed throughout the investigation and court process. I hope this result gives them some comfort."
