Controlling partner's brutal attack leaves teacher paralysed
A woman has been left with life-changing injuries after her violent partner snapped her neck when she attempted to end their eight-year relationship.
Trudi Burgess, 57, suffered a fractured and dislocated spine during a horrific assault by Robert Easom at their Lancashire home. The languages teacher heard a crack in her neck during the attack and believed she was going to die.
Years of abuse culminate in life-changing violence
The mother of two had endured what she described as eight years of coercive control and abuse before gathering the courage to leave Easom. Speaking after his conviction, she revealed his dual personality, stating: "He just had this monster side to him, like a Jekyll and Hyde. He was very, very, very frightening when he was in a rage."
Trudi compared his transformations to The Incredible Hulk, explaining that he would eventually return to normal after his violent episodes.
The final assault occurred on February 17 this year when Trudi told Easom she was leaving him. She recalled screaming "Don't hurt me" as he grabbed her from the bed and slammed her head-first into the floor.
Swift justice and lifelong consequences
Jurors at Preston Crown Court needed just 27 minutes to convict Easom of intentionally causing grievous bodily harm. The 56-year-old, who is currently of no fixed address, will be sentenced on February 27, 2026.
Doctors performed an 11-hour emergency operation on Trudi's spine, but she is unlikely to ever walk again. The grandmother of two has been forced to leave her teaching career and requires extensive home adaptations and specialist wheelchairs to regain some independence.
Trudi's lawyer, Natasha Ross of JMW Solicitors, is seeking compensation through the Criminal Injuries Compensation Scheme, though payments are capped at £250,000. The family has also established a fundraising campaign that has already gathered over £80,000 towards her ongoing care costs.
The case highlights the devastating consequences of domestic violence and the courage required by victims to leave abusive relationships. Police have praised Trudi's bravery in coming forward and helping secure the conviction.
