Two Men Charged for Trying to Trip Cyclists at Giro d'Italia in Viral Stunt
Two Men Charged for Giro d'Italia Cyclist Push Stunt

Two men attempting to gain viral fame by pushing cyclists during the Giro d'Italia have been identified and charged. The individuals, aged 20 and 21, were caught on live television lunging at riders and trying to trip them as the race passed through San Vitaliano.

The Incident

Footage shows the men laughing while a friend records the reckless act. One cyclist was pushed, risking a serious crash, though the rider escaped injury and responded with an angry gesture. The event occurred during stage 6, a 141km route from Paestum to Naples.

Legal Consequences

Local media reported on Friday that the men told police they were attempting a 'prank.' They now face charges of causing a public hazard. Authorities are expected to seek a DASPO, an Italian ban from sporting events, along with fines. One suspect has a prior robbery conviction, according to RAI.

The CPA riders' union is anticipated to file a formal complaint. Giro d'Italia organisers condemned the act on X, stating: 'Respect the riders. Respect the race. Respect the #GirodItalia. But there's a line not to cross. Don't be like this guy.'

Reactions

British commentator Rob Hatch expressed outrage: 'There's a lack of brain cells there. Have you nothing better to do?' Co-commentator Dani Rowe added: 'As if this sport wasn't dangerous enough.' Fans on social media echoed the sentiment, with one calling the men 'losers' and another demanding arrest.

The Giro d'Italia, a prestigious three-week race across Italy, saw chaos earlier in the week when a crash on a cobbled corner took down several race favorites.
