A teacher has been accused of sexually assaulting a baby boy he was in the process of adopting and then filming the infant as he lay on a bed showing signs of having stopped breathing, a murder trial has heard. The tragic case involves 13-month-old Preston Davey, who died after being taken to Blackpool Victoria Hospital.
Allegations of Routine Ill-Treatment
Jamie Varley, 37, is alleged to have "routinely ill-treated" little Preston Davey, taking indecent pictures and videos of the child. Varley faces a total of 26 charges, including murder, related to the sexual and physical mistreatment of the baby. The court heard that Preston was just 13 months old when he passed away.
Partner Also Accused in the Case
Standing alongside Varley in the dock at Preston Crown Court is his partner, John McGowan-Fazakerley, 32. McGowan-Fazakerley is accused of causing or allowing the death of the child and faces four other offences. Both men have entered not guilty pleas to all charges against them.
The couple had been set to adopt Preston Davey, but the process was tragically cut short by the baby's death. The trial is ongoing, with details emerging about the alleged abuse and the final moments captured on video. Authorities are presenting evidence that includes the filmed footage, which purportedly shows Preston in distress and struggling for life.
This case has shocked the local community and raised serious questions about child protection and adoption procedures. The prosecution is expected to argue that Varley's actions were deliberate and malicious, while the defence will likely challenge the evidence and motives behind the charges.
As the trial proceeds, more testimonies and forensic evidence are anticipated to be presented to the jury. The outcome could have significant implications for how similar cases are handled in the future, particularly concerning the safety of vulnerable children in adoptive homes.
