A married man has been found guilty of stalking his former mistress in a disturbing case that saw him pursue her up England's highest mountain, Scafell Pike, after their affair ended.
The 42-year-old, whose identity remains protected for legal reasons, was convicted at Carlisle Crown Court for a campaign of harassment against his ex-lover. The court heard how he repeatedly contacted the woman despite her clear attempts to cut ties.
The Obsessive Pursuit
The relationship, which began as an extramarital affair, turned toxic when the woman tried to end it. Instead of accepting the breakup, the man escalated his behaviour, bombarding her with messages and eventually tracking her down during a hike in the Lake District.
Prosecutors described how the woman was shocked to find her former lover waiting for her near the summit of Scafell Pike, standing at 978 metres above sea level. This encounter left her feeling terrified and vulnerable in the remote location.
Legal Consequences
The court imposed a five-year restraining order against the defendant, prohibiting any further contact with the victim. Judge James Adkin condemned the man's actions as "a gross violation of trust and personal boundaries."
This case highlights the serious consequences of obsessive behaviour following relationship breakdowns. Police have reminded victims of stalking that they should report incidents immediately, as early intervention can prevent escalation.
