A healthcare professional is facing a potential prison sentence after a domestic firepit gathering turned into a nightmare scenario, leaving her husband with catastrophic burns.
Sarah Irving, 45, from North Yorkshire, pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm following the horrific incident last summer. The court heard how what began as a pleasant evening outdoors escalated into a life-changing tragedy.
The Fateful Evening
On June 10, 2023, Irving attempted to reignite a dying firepit in their garden by pouring petrol onto the smouldering embers. The flammable liquid instantly vaporised, creating a massive fireball that engulfed her 47-year-old husband.
"The defendant poured petrol directly from a can onto an already lit firepit," explained prosecutor Rob Galley during the hearing at York Crown Court. "This caused an immediate and violent explosion of flames."
Life-Altering Injuries
The victim suffered third-degree burns to 25% of his body, including his arms, chest, and face. Medical reports confirm he will require multiple skin grafts and permanent scarring.
"This was not a momentary lapse in judgement," Galley emphasised. "The defendant made a conscious decision to use an accelerant on an open flame, with devastating consequences."
Professional Background Adds to Gravity
As a registered nurse, Irving's medical knowledge makes the incident particularly concerning. The Nursing and Midwifery Council has been notified and may conduct their own investigation.
Defence counsel Mark Foley argued his client had shown "genuine remorse" and described the act as "a terrible misjudgement rather than intentional harm."
Judgement Pending
Judge Simon Hickey has ordered pre-sentence reports, acknowledging the complex nature of the case. Irving has been released on conditional bail until sentencing on October 20.
"This is an exceptionally serious matter," Judge Hickey warned. "The court must consider both the profound impact on the victim and the defendant's level of culpability."
