Mother Discovers Roommate Allegedly Attempting to Throw Five-Year-Old from Third-Floor Window
A routine errand run turned into a parent's worst nightmare when a mother returned home to find her roommate allegedly trying to force her five-year-old child out of a third-floor window. The incident, which occurred in an apartment shared by the family, escalated into a violent confrontation with disturbing religious overtones.
Horrific Scene Unfolds Upon Mother's Return
Karen Garcia had reportedly left her two children, aged five and eleven, in the care of 41-year-old Vira Zabudko while she attended to errands. Zabudko, who lived in the same apartment with Garcia and her sons, initially prevented the mother from re-entering the residence when she returned. After finally gaining access, Garcia claims she discovered Zabudko attempting to push her five-year-old son through a window screen from the third-floor apartment.
A physical altercation ensued, during which Zabudko allegedly directed the young boy to enter the shower "to wash the sins out because he is dirty." According to criminal complaints obtained by local authorities, Zabudko also attempted to force Garcia into the shower area during the confrontation.
Disturbing Religious References and Mental Health Concerns
Fayette County District Attorney Michael Aubele expressed particular concern about Zabudko's alleged statements during the incident. "I am not really sure what her religious status is, but I don't know of any religion that would reasonably think that throwing a child or drowning a child was going to wash somebody of sins," Aubele stated during a press briefing.
Authorities noted that Zabudko is a Ukrainian national, though her immigration status remains unclear. "We are still trying to gather some information, including how long Ms. Zabudko has been in the area, how long they have cohabitated," Aubele explained, adding that investigators are examining potential mental health factors in the case.
Criminal Charges and Ongoing Investigation
Vira Zabudko faces multiple serious charges including:
- Aggravated assault
- Two counts of unlawful restraint
- Two counts of recklessly endangering another person
- Simple assault
Following her arrest, Zabudko was booked into Fayette County Jail and subsequently posted bond. She is scheduled to appear in court on April 9 as the investigation continues. Police reported that when they located Garcia and her two sons after the incident, all three were soaking wet, though thankfully physically unharmed.
Parallel Case Highlights Child Safety Concerns
This disturbing incident follows another recent childcare tragedy in which a teenage babysitter received a life sentence for killing a nine-year-old boy in his care. Daniel Cameron, who was fifteen at the time of the killing, had been paid to babysit Hunter MacIntosh but left the residence early.
Court documents reveal that Cameron sent disturbing messages via social media platforms shortly after leaving the child alone, asking friends "What would you do if I killed someone?" The victim's mother discovered her son deceased with a 25-centimeter knife embedded in his stomach upon returning home around 10:30 PM.
An autopsy determined the child had suffered three large knife wounds to his chest and torso, along with neck marks consistent with asphyxiation. Evidence suggested the killing occurred within ninety minutes of Cameron assuming care responsibilities. The teenage babysitter pleaded guilty to the crime and remains incarcerated.
Both cases underscore critical concerns about child safety and caregiver vetting procedures, with authorities emphasizing the importance of thorough background checks and situational awareness when entrusting children to others' care.
