Texas Mother Faces Charges for Alleged Medical Abuse of Three-Year-Old Son

A Texas mother has been arrested and charged with serious crimes after authorities accused her of fabricating her young son's medical history to manipulate healthcare providers into performing invasive and unnecessary procedures. Kaitlyn Rose Laura, aged 31, allegedly convinced doctors that her three-year-old boy suffered from severe conditions, including cerebral palsy and life-threatening feeding issues, leading to surgeries and treatments he did not require.

Details of the Alleged Abuse and Fraudulent Fundraising

According to the Tarrant County Sheriff's Office, Laura forged medical reports and used social media to claim her son needed a wheelchair and end-of-life care, despite no evidence supporting these assertions. She reportedly had the child on 17 different medications and restricted his diet to less than 1,000 calories per day, which sometimes included dog food. Medical professionals noted in an affidavit that conditions reported by Laura, such as seizures and severe feeding problems, were unsupported by tests or evaluations.

In one instance, the boy was taken to an emergency room for alleged dehydration and an inability to eat, but staff observed him consuming snacks and meals normally with no signs of dehydration. Authorities say Laura was "very pushy" about inserting a feeding tube and refused alternative treatments, leading to a gastrojejunostomy tube procedure that created a new connection between his stomach and small intestine.

Fundraising and Legal Charges

Laura allegedly appealed for donations through multiple online fundraising pages and an Amazon wish list, claiming her son would be in a wheelchair for life. GoFundMe confirmed that the fundraisers have been removed and all donors refunded. She now faces charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and causing serious bodily injury to a child. Sheriff Bill Waybourn described the case as a "horrific crime," stating that the boy bears scars from unnecessary surgeries and may suffer trauma for years.

Waybourn added that such cases are often complex and challenging to investigate, potentially leading to oversight in the criminal justice system. Police in Glen Rose referred the case to Tarrant County in February due to resource limitations. An investigation into potential Medicaid fraud is also underway. Laura has declined to comment on the allegations.
