An 80-year-old man has been rescued after being discovered living in a windowless basement room devoid of basic sanitation, cooking facilities, or access to hygiene for what authorities believe could span several decades.
Discovery During Police Search
The distressing situation came to light on Monday, January 19, when Finnish police conducted a search of a villa situated in a northern district of Helsinki. Officers described the location as a normal residential area within the capital city, making the findings particularly shocking.
During the operation, police found the elderly man residing in what they have termed inhumane conditions. His living space was a basement room with no windows and no possibility for hygiene, use of a toilet, or cooking. The man was found in poor physical condition and required immediate medical assistance.
Investigation into Confinement
Police have emphasised that the man was not physically locked in the room, but they are now investigating whether he had the ability or opportunity to leave. Detective Inspector Jari Korkalainen stated, We are now investigating whether he had the opportunity to move from the room or whether he lacked that ability. This line of inquiry is crucial to determining if any criminal offences were committed.
Arrests and Suspects
In connection with the case, two men and a woman, all in their 60s, were arrested. They have since been released but remain suspects as the investigation continues. The suspects consist of a couple and their male relative, with the two men related to each other. The villa is owned by one of the men involved.
Police confirmed that the 80-year-old victim is not related to the suspects, but they were known to each other. Although all parties, including the victim and suspects, were registered at the address, investigators noted they had not lived there for the entire period in question. All individuals involved are Finnish citizens.
Ongoing Police Inquiry
The investigation remains active as authorities work to ascertain precisely how long the man lived in the basement and whether any criminal acts occurred. This case has raised significant concerns about elderly welfare and potential abuse in residential settings.
