A family in British Columbia has been left traumatized after a runaway boat flipped off the back of a truck and smashed into their vehicle during a road trip.
Incident Details
Ingrid Achterberg captured the moment the poorly secured vessel struck her car as she drove with her family in Cariboo, British Columbia, last week. Her dashcam footage shows the green boat careening into the air before colliding with the front of her car, causing those inside to scream.
Pieces of debris can be seen flying across the vehicle as Achterberg pulls over to the side of the road. Her daughter asks, "What happened?" as Achterberg reassures her family that everything is okay and urges them to exit the vehicle.
Aftermath and Response
Erica, whose own daughter was also in the car, described the incident as a "near-death experience." According to the family, the boat owner returned shortly after they pulled over. The family is now undergoing massages and physiotherapy as part of their recovery.
Legal Consequences in Canada
In Canada, drivers with unsecured loads can face fines if they fail to take necessary precautions. The City of Edmonton, Alberta, has a dedicated webpage reminding drivers to secure their loads properly. It states: "It is common to see vehicles hauling material in Edmonton. However, drivers sometimes forget to secure their loads properly, allowing things to fall off along the way. Material from an unsecured load that falls onto the road endangers other drivers and creates litter, which is unsightly and bad for the environment."
The city emphasizes that securing loads with tie-downs, a tarp, or cargo net is quick and inexpensive, with items available for less than $20 at most hardware stores.
