A homeless man has appeared in court charged with the murder of a pregnant woman and her partner in Melbourne's south-east. Ross Judd, 34, is accused of killing 39-year-old Athena Georgopoulos and a 50-year-old man at a home in Mount Waverley on Monday night.
During a brief hearing at Melbourne Magistrates Court on Wednesday, the police prosecutor requested a 10-week extension to prepare a brief of evidence, citing the complexity of the crime scene and the need for DNA analysis. The prosecutor noted that one of the victims was pregnant, which had contributed to delays in autopsies.
Judd's defence lawyer, Annie Allan, said it was her client's first time in custody and requested he see a prison nurse to follow up on medication. The accused, who wore a black T-shirt and had a short black beard and mohawk-style haircut, stared ahead during the hearing and confirmed he understood his next court date.
Victoria Police had responded to calls from a concerned neighbour about yelling from the property around 9.20pm on Monday. Officers arrived at 9.50pm to find the two bodies. Judd was later arrested at Westall railway station, about 6km from the home, accompanied by two large dogs.
In a tribute on Facebook, Georgopoulos's mother expressed her grief, saying her daughter had been due to give birth in four months. 'These last days you were so happy, we dreamed together about our granddaughter... and suddenly all was extinguished in one night,' she wrote.
