Grieving mum threatened by trolls after son's death

A grieving mother has spoken of her terror after receiving menacing phone calls warning that she and her loved ones “are next”. Renatta Ginns was targeted by an anonymous troll in the months after her son Jason Anderson was found dead.

Jason, 33, was found on the banks of the River Ayr at Failford, near Mauchline, on Valentine's Day, around six miles from his home. He had been last seen in Catrine two months earlier. Police Scotland have never launched a murder investigation into his death, only describing it as “unexplained”. Jason's family, however, believe his death could be suspicious and have lodged complaints over the handling of the case.

Threatening phone call reported to police

Renatta reported the threatening call to police last month. Officers attended her home at 2.40am the next day. Speaking to the Record, she said she is too afraid to leave the house alone.

“They came on the phone in a very daunting voice saying Jason’s name,” she said. “Then they said my other son was next and that they were coming for me soon. It was horrible - they way they said Jason’s name.”

“I can’t leave my house without someone being with me. I have to have someone there at all times because of the threatening messages and now the call,” she added. “The police told me to phone my provider and ask them to block private numbers. They didn’t look at my phone. They are doing nothing to keep me or my son safe. Where is the protection?”

Family demands answers over death

Family and friends attended a protest at Kilmarnock Police Station on Saturday to support Renatta as she continues to search for justice for her son. Jason disappeared after police were called to investigate a domestic incident. A police helicopter, drones, the Dive and Marine Unit and mountain rescue teams were brought in to search for him, but days turned to weeks with no sign of Jason.

His body was pulled from the water around six miles from Catrine on February 14, two months after he was reported missing. Results of a post-mortem are understood to have been shared with the family, who say it proves Jason did not drown or harm himself.

During the initial search, police released CCTV showing Jason the day before he was last seen. His family say the footage also showed bruising to his face. In August, the family launched a renewed call for information after obtaining new CCTV images, in which Jason can be seen walking with a male around the time he was last seen.

Family calls for second post-mortem

The family believe they know the identity of the man in the footage, but say some requests for information to be investigated have been repeatedly denied by Police Scotland. According to Renatta, dad-of-four Jason called his cousin in Manchester just hours before the CCTV images were captured, begging for help in getting a train out of Scotland.

In the weeks following Jason's disappearance, Renatta received a string of sinister messages on Facebook. One read: “Do you wanna see your son’s final moments alive? Because he was crying like a b****. And good luck with the police finding me, I’m not in the UK no more.”

The sender of those messages has never been traced. Renatta has demanded a second post-mortem to get to the bottom of Jason's death.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “Around 5.10pm on Friday, 25 September, 2026, we received a report of a threatening communication in the Kilmarnock area. Safety advice was provided and enquiries are ongoing.”
