Four-Year-Old Girl's Life Permanently Altered by Vicious Bulldog Mauling

A young girl's life has been irrevocably changed following a terrifying and unprovoked attack by an American bulldog at a friend's residence. Luna-Ann Forsyth, aged four at the time of the incident, sustained severe facial injuries and profound psychological trauma after the dog named Junior launched a sudden assault.

Horrific Details of the Attack Emerge in Court

Warwick Crown Court heard harrowing details of the attack that occurred on August 6, 2023. The American bulldog, owned by Emma Callaghan, escaped from a secured room and jumped on the little girl. The dog grabbed Luna-Ann's face with its mouth, dragged her to the ground, and stood over her while she screamed in terror.

Her mother, Amy Hobson, desperately kicked the animal multiple times before it released its grip. The child's face was covered in blood with a significant gash on her cheek and visible puncture wounds. Emergency bed sheets were used in a frantic attempt to stem the bleeding before she was rushed to hospital.

Life-Altering Injuries and Ongoing Trauma

Judge Matthew Walsh KC described the injuries as "horrific" and detailed the lasting impact on the young victim. Now seven years old, Luna-Ann has already undergone two operations on her cheek with another procedure still required. The psychological damage has been equally devastating.

"It has changed Luna-Ann, she has been traumatised, she struggles to sleep," the judge stated. The family was forced to relocate from Nuneaton after the girl became too frightened to live near the attack location. She remains terrified of dogs and worries about how other children will perceive her appearance as she progresses through primary school.

Mother's Heartbreaking Court Statement

Amy Hobson delivered an emotional victim impact statement describing how her daughter has transformed from a confident child to "a shadow of who she used to be." Luna-Ann experiences frequent nightmares, waking up screaming "Get him off me" and reliving the traumatic event.

The mother revealed her daughter's fear of being bullied about her facial scars and the constant reminders when other children ask questions. The entire family has been affected, with Hobson herself diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. They face ongoing strain from hospital visits and claim they have never received an apology for the attack.

Court Sentencing and Future Proceedings

Emma Callaghan was convicted of being the owner in charge of a dog dangerously out of control causing injury. The court heard she suffers from mental health conditions including bipolar disorder, which the judge considered in sentencing.

Judge Walsh noted that while the pre-sentence report hinted at remorse, there was "a degree of victim blaming" and he did not consider genuine remorse as a mitigating factor. Callaghan received a three-month prison sentence suspended for 18 months, along with 25 days of rehabilitation and 250 hours of unpaid community service.

A further hearing is scheduled to consider applications for a destruction order concerning the dog Junior and whether Callaghan should be permitted to own dogs in the future. The case highlights the devastating consequences that can occur when dangerous dogs are not properly controlled.
