Vernon Kay Nearly Swears Live on BBC Radio 2 Over Litterbug Pet Peeve
Vernon Kay Nearly Swears Live on Radio 2 Over Litter

Vernon Kay appeared to come dangerously close to swearing live on BBC Radio 2 during his mid-morning programme on June 24, 2026, while discussing a pet peeve about littering. The incident occurred during a conversation with colleague Bobbie Pryor, when Kay's frustration over people discarding rubbish nearly led him to utter an expletive on air.

Womble Costume Discussion Triggers Frustration

The segment began lightheartedly as Kay mentioned that Pryor "used to go out dressed as a Womble," referring to the beloved children's characters known for recycling. He then revealed that a listener named Tracy had sent in a photograph of herself and her twin sister dressed as Wombles. Pryor described the image as "of a time," to which Kay responded: "When picking up litter was cool," referencing the Wombles' habit of collecting and recycling waste.

Pryor countered that litter-picking is "still cool," and Kay agreed, adding: "It really is, and we need to do it because a lot of people take our communities for granted and people just chucking rubbish..." After a brief pause, he added: "Rubbish everywhere."

Near-Swear Moment Acknowledged On Air

At that point, Kay appeared to catch himself, saying: "Ooh, nearly! Oh, so close! Janice-Janine (Kay's producer), I was so close!" He explained: "I was so close! 'Cos it annoys me, you see. It gets my back up. I don't want to live in your garbage, and no one else does. Take it home; find a bin and put it in. It's really easy."

This is not the first time Kay has had a close call with swearing on Radio 2. In 2025, he was forced to apologise after saying "Bloody hell" live on air while discussing Sara Cox's Great Northern Marathon Challenge. After the slip, he corrected himself: "I mean flipping hell, oh gosh. Sorry, sorry, I apologise, I apologise." He attributed the mistake to being genuinely moved by a young boy's story.

Disappointment at ARIAS Awards

The near-swear incident comes after Kay opened up about his disappointment at losing an award at the 2026 ARIAS, where he and his team were nominated. His producer Janine remarked: "Honestly, what a privilege. We were saying how lucky we are to just spend an evening with some amazing, creative, fantastic people in the radio world and to just enjoy celebrating their successes. Amazing."

Kay, who was absent from the ceremony, responded: "That's Janine politely saying, 'We're absolutely gutted that we lost'. Well done, Janine, you're such a professional. I wouldn't have said that."
