Widdecombe Murder: Police Believe Attacked Day Before

Police have issued a new statement as the investigation into Ann Widdecombe's death continues. A murder enquiry was launched yesterday (July 10) following the death of the former Conservative MP, Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed. Ms Widdecombe, who was 78, was found at her home in Devon on Thursday with serious head injuries.

Timeline of Attack

Police believe she was attacked the day before her body was found. In an update this afternoon, a senior officer said they believe Ms Widdecombe was attacked on Wednesday, July 8 at around 12.30pm. The BBC reported this morning that a large police presence remains in the small village of Haytor, with a cordon still up and forensic evidence being gathered.

Last Media Appearance

Ms Widdecombe, who was the Reform UK spokesperson for Immigration and Justice, made her last media appearance that morning when she appeared on a live broadcast on Talk TV to discuss Reform UK leader Nigel Farage calling a by-election in Clacton.

Investigation Progress

Devon and Cornwall Police said their investigation is moving at "pace" and they are searching for a suspect who is believed to be a white male. In their latest statement, the police force has said that officers are making progress on the investigation and are "pursuing a number of lines of enquiry". They added that at this time they have made the "active decision not to release further information, including descriptions of any potential suspects or releasing CCTV footage."
