The trial of a teenager accused of stabbing a 17-year-old boy in the leg, which led to the limb being amputated, is continuing at Newport Crown Court. Idris Ahmed, 19, faces charges of causing grievous bodily harm with intent, unlawfully inflicting grievous bodily harm, and having an article with a bladed point. He denies all charges.
Incident on Barry Island beach
The alleged incident took place at Barry Island during the bank holiday weekend on May 25. On the first day of the trial, the prosecution barrister Nuhu Gobir told the court that the victim went to Barry Island with friends and they were having fun on the beach before the incident. The court was also told that the defendant's group of friends was also at Barry Island on the same day and were talking to girls in the victim's group.
One of the alleged victim's male friends was said to "become quiet" when he saw males from the other group. The victim later said he had the impression his friends "had an issue" with some of the defendant's group. The victim tried to be diplomatic and asked Ahmed's group if they had a problem with his friend's group, after which the 17-year-old shook hands with the group apart from one member.
Moments after the stabbing
Mr Gobir told jurors the teenager who was stabbed heard someone say "watch out" before feeling a pain in his leg. The court was later shown an interview in which the victim described the moments just after the stabbing. He said there was blood "everywhere", people were shouting, and added that he thought he was going to die. A woman could be heard crying in the public gallery as the video of the boy's interview was played to the court.
When he was in hospital, the victim underwent an operation and the stab wound was measured at 4cm in length. On June 2, after several blood transfusions, it was discovered oxygen was not circulating around the leg, and the decision was made that an amputation was necessary.
Witness evidence and recovery of knife
Jurors also heard evidence from witnesses who said they later saw Ahmed leaving the beach. One witness said he overheard someone say "I need to dash this" before hearing something hit the Vale of Glamorgan brass band building. The area was later searched by police and a knife was recovered.
On the second day of the trial, a friend of the complainant who was present at Barry Island gave evidence via a pre-recorded police interview. In the interview, the witness said: "I was with my friends. We was in Barry. We went to the right side of the beach where the rocks are. We seen three boys. I recognised them, they recognised me. I spoke to them and they acted like we was cool. There was a girl who ran over to some boys she knew didn't like me. The boys came down and they stabbed my friend."
Ahmed, of Graham Walk, Riverside, Cardiff, denies all the charges he faces. The trial is expected to last around 10 days.
