A taxi driver was knocked unconscious after a gang repeatedly punched him in the face in what police describe as an unprovoked assault. The incident occurred on Saturday, July 11, around 11:30pm, after the driver picked up a group of men from a restaurant on Mill Lane in Wavertree.
The driver transported the men to their destination on Picton Road, where they failed to pay the fare. When the driver verbally challenged them, the men ran back to the taxi, shouted and swore at him, and punched him repeatedly before fleeing the scene.
Public Assistance and Hospitalisation
Merseyside Police confirmed that members of the public came to the driver's aid after he lost consciousness. The 34-year-old driver was taken to hospital with a facial injury. Detective Inspector Jemma Berry condemned the attack, stating: "This was a nasty and unprovoked assault on a man who was simply trying to do his job. This type of behaviour is totally unacceptable and we will do everything within our powers to find those responsible and bring them to justice."
Investigation and Appeal
The force has launched an investigation, including witness and forensic enquiries. Images of two men believed to be able to assist with enquiries have been released to the public. DI Berry added: "I would ask anyone who recognises the men to come forward and tell us what they know as we believe they could be vital to our investigation."
