Brynmawr Foundation School has paid an emotional tribute to 14-year-old Lilly Jones, describing her as a 'valued member of the school community' known for her 'kindness, warmth, and bubbly personality'. The teenager was reported missing from Blaina in Blaenau Gwent on Saturday, and a body was found near Duffryn Park on Monday evening as part of the search. Formal identification is yet to take place, but Lilly's family has been informed.
School's Tribute
Head teacher Gerard McNamara said the school was 'deeply saddened' to hear of Lilly's tragic passing. In a full tribute shared with WalesOnline, he stated: 'She was a valued member of our school community, known for her kindness, warmth, and bubbly personality. Her loss will be felt profoundly by students, staff, and all who knew her. Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with her family, friends, and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.' The school is providing support to pupils and staff affected and is working closely with relevant agencies. Brynmawr was closed on Thursday due to severe weather warnings, but support remains available.
Community Mourns
The small town of Blaina has been left devastated. Heartfelt tributes and flowers have been left near Duffryn Park, describing Lilly as 'a beautiful girl' and 'an amazing friend'. Brynmawr Foundation School also left flowers near the police cordon on Wednesday, with a note saying: 'Always in our hearts'. Blaina Bowls Club, whose member Carl Jones is Lilly's father, expressed its 'deepest sympathy and unwavering support'. Reverend Liane Chalmers of St Peter's Church opened the church for the community to light candles, write in a book of condolence, or speak with clergy. Dozens of tealights were lit next to a black-and-white photo of Lilly.
Fundraiser and Investigation
A fundraiser to pay for Lilly's funeral and memorial has raised over £12,000. The organiser said: 'Let's pull together again to raise enough money to give this beautiful angel the send off she deserves.' Gwent Police launched a murder investigation on Tuesday and arrested a 14-year-old boy on suspicion of murder. He remains in police custody. Senior investigating officer Detective Chief Inspector Steven Thomas said: 'Our inquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the death and we currently have one person in police custody being questioned. I'm asking anyone with information to please come and speak with us. I'd also encourage people not to speculate online as this is a live investigation.' The incident has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) in line with normal procedures. An IOPC spokesman confirmed the referral is being assessed.
