Prince Harry lost his latest privacy case against the publisher of the Daily Mail, and royal fans had a clear reaction on social media. The Duke of Sussex began a five-day trip to the UK on Tuesday, just as a High Court judge dismissed his claim against Associated Newspapers Limited (ANL) over alleged unlawful information gathering.
Case Details and Allegations
Harry was part of a group of high-profile individuals, including Sir Elton John, Baroness Doreen Lawrence, Liz Hurley, and Sadie Frost. They alleged that ANL engaged in voicemail interception, landline tapping, and obtaining information by deception, known as “blagging,” carried out by private investigators, freelance journalists, and staff. ANL denied the claims and argued the cases were brought too late.
Mr Justice Nicklin ruled that none of the seven claimants had proved the allegations of unlawful information gathering.
Reactions from ANL and the Claimants
Former Daily Mail editor Paul Dacre, now ANL’s editor-in-chief, called the ruling “a momentous victory for the Mail” and “an overwhelming vindication of our journalism.” In a joint statement, Harry and Baroness Lawrence said: “It is a complete and obvious whitewash, but sadly not altogether unexpected.”
Royal Fans Speak Out
Royal fans expressed their opinions on social media, many criticizing Harry. One user on X wrote: “Harry seemed to think he could get away with making allegation after allegation simply because his family has largely chosen not to fight back publicly. But courtrooms don’t run on interviews, headlines, or victim narratives, dear Harry. They run on EVIDENCE, and courts have a habit of interrupting carefully crafted narratives. Congratulations, Harry! Reality finally said hello.”
Another user commented: “His entitlement and arrogance checked again. Suspect he’ll learn nothing and play victim.” A third said: “The sense of entitlement is astounding! Courtrooms don’t care about status. They care about evidence.” A fourth added: “He's learning that not all people are like his father, they can fight back and they can win too. Let this be a lesson to him and his wife for the future, learn from it!” A fifth remarked: “He found out the hard way that in a court of law facts do not care about your feelings.”
Harry's Full Statement
In his joint statement with Lady Lawrence, Harry elaborated: “We came to court seeking justice and accountability. But we have received neither. Generic findings about various private investigators that were held by the courts in these parallel claims to have carried out unlawful activity at the very same time in relation to similar stories and well-known individuals have been wholly ignored. The fact that this court has chosen to dismiss them represents an inconsistency which is hard to understand or reconcile with common sense, or the evidence heard in the court room itself. It is a complete and obvious whitewash, but sadly not altogether unexpected. However, the lengths to which the court has gone to exonerate the Mail is as shocking as it is totally unwarranted. When the court says there is not sufficient evidence of wrongdoing, despite the documents showing otherwise, then one does wonder how justice was ever going to be achieved.”
