Man in court over 17 explosive devices found in Belfast

A 35-year-old man has appeared in court in Belfast after 17 improvised explosive devices were discovered during searches in the city.

Wesley Thomas Fletcher, of Leopold Street, faces three charges: two counts of possession of explosives under suspicious circumstances and one count of possession of a prohibited weapon, a Taser.

Court appearance and charges

Mr Fletcher appeared in the dock at Belfast Magistrates' Court for a brief hearing on Monday morning, having been arrested on Friday. When asked if he understood the charges, he replied "yes".

A detective constable said he believed he could connect the accused to the charge. The court heard that 17 improvised explosive devices and two detonators had been found.

Security operation and remand

The charges follow searches at properties on the Shankill Road and Edwina Street on Friday and Saturday, which sparked a security operation.

No application for bail was made, with a defence lawyer telling the court there were no suitable addresses to offer for bail that day. Mr Fletcher was remanded in custody.

The case is next set to be mentioned on November 30.
