An inquest into the death of a man who collapsed shortly after being released from Merseyside Police custody will begin next week. David Brown, known affectionately as Brownie, was stopped by officers on Priory Road, Liverpool, on the morning of August 21 last year.
He was taken to St Anne Street police station before being subsequently released. Merseyside Police were contacted later that afternoon and informed the 41-year-old had collapsed at home. He was taken to the Royal Liverpool University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Family's tribute
His sister Leeann Doolin said in a statement: “We are devastated by David’s death at the age of just 41 years old. We need to know how this can have happened so suddenly.
“David (known as Brownie) was everyone’s best friend. He was a loving dad, son, brother, brother-in-law and uncle. He had a heart of pure gold, was generous and was the life and soul of the party.
“He loved life and did not have a bad word to say about anyone. He has left a huge hole in our family.”
Inquest details
After long delays, Mr Brown's inquest will take place at Liverpool and Wirral Coroners Court from Monday next week (October 19) until Friday (October 23). The inquest will be heard by a jury. Merseyside Police are involved as Interested Persons.
The coroner will consider whether Article 2, the right to life, is engaged in the inquest. David's family are represented by Leigh Day human rights team partner Leanne Devine and solicitor Emily Driver.
