Inquest Date Confirmed for Callum Kerr

An inquest into the death of Callum Kerr, a 35-year-old father who died after being restrained on a Jet2 flight to Manchester Airport, has been scheduled for Tuesday, July 14 at Manchester Coroners' Court. The hearing is expected to open and then be adjourned pending further investigation.

Mr Kerr, from Warrington, had boarded the flight from Larnaca, Cyprus, on June 21 with his girlfriend. Witnesses reported he became disruptive after allegedly consuming alcohol before the flight. He was described as a former bareknuckle boxer and cage fighter.

Police Response and Medical Emergency

Greater Manchester Police were called to Manchester Airport at 2:25 am on June 22 following reports of a man behaving aggressively towards passengers and crew. By the time officers arrived, passengers had already restrained Mr Kerr. Police used handcuffs to detain him but quickly realized he was unresponsive and began first aid. CPR was administered, and he was taken to hospital, where he died on June 23.

Two reports of assault—one against a passenger and one against a cabin crew member—were made. A mandatory referral was sent to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), which is investigating the actions of the officers involved. GMP's Major Incident Team is also investigating the circumstances on the flight.

Family Tribute and IOPC Statement

Mr Kerr's family paid tribute, saying: "Callum was a family man, father to three beautiful young children, a lover of sport and with a heart of gold." IOPC Director of Engagement Amanda Rowe stated: "Our thoughts are with Mr Kerr’s family and loved ones... Our investigation will be thorough, and independent of the police, to ensure we understand exactly what has happened."

The IOPC has gathered body-worn video footage and initial statements from officers, who are currently being treated as witnesses rather than being investigated for misconduct. No arrests have been made in connection with the incident.

Jet2 Statement

A Jet2 spokesperson expressed condolences: "We are aware that a customer has sadly passed away... We would like to offer our sincere condolences to the customer’s friends and family." The airline declined further comment due to ongoing investigations.
