Georgia Teen to Appear in Plea Hearing Over 2024 School Shooting That Killed Four
Georgia Teen Plea Hearing for 2024 School Shooting

Colt Gray, now 16, is scheduled to appear in a Barrow County superior court on 24 July for a non-negotiated plea hearing, according to court documents filed on 11 July. Gray is accused of killing two students and two teachers during the 2024 Apalachee high school shooting in Winder, Georgia. He faces 55 criminal counts, including malice murder, aggravated battery, and aggravated assault. Originally charged as an adult, Gray had pleaded not guilty. The second-degree murder charges alone carry up to 30 years in prison, with a potential total of 180 years.

Non-Negotiated Plea Details

The judge assigned a non-negotiated plea and sentencing hearing, meaning prosecutors and the defense have not agreed on a sentence. In such cases, the defendant pleads guilty, and the judge decides the sentence after hearing summaries and recommendations from both sides. The judge had previously set a 15 July deadline for Gray to notify the court and prosecutors if he intended to plead guilty before trial. Gray has remained in a juvenile detention center since his arrest.

Father's Conviction

Colin Gray, Colt's father, was found guilty in March of second-degree murder in connection with the shooting. This marked the first such case in Georgia where a parent faced criminal charges for a mass shooting carried out by their child. Prosecutors argued that Colin Gray was criminally negligent for allowing his son access to a firearm after receiving warnings that Colt might harm others. Colin Gray admitted giving his son the rifle used in the attack, saying he hoped to strengthen their relationship through hunting.

Details of the Attack

According to investigators, in September 2024, Gray brought a semiautomatic assault-style rifle onto a school bus, concealed in a book bag wrapped in poster board. He left his second-period class, emerged from a bathroom with the rifle, and opened fire in a classroom and hallways. The victims were Richard Aspinwall, 39; Christina Irimie, 53; and 14-year-olds Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo. Another teacher and eight students were wounded. The Gun Violence Archive defines a mass murder as at least four killed and a mass shooting as four or more shot or wounded.

Broader Context

The US continues to report high numbers of mass shootings and murders, including at schools, prompting calls for stronger federal gun control. However, Congress has not implemented such restrictions.
