Lagerald Vick, a former standout guard for the University of Kansas men's basketball team, has been arrested and charged with murder in connection with a fatal shooting in Kansas City, Kansas, according to authorities.
Arrest and Charges
Vick, 26, was taken into custody on Tuesday by the Kansas City, Kansas Police Department. He faces one count of first-degree murder in the death of 24-year-old Dominique Harvey. The shooting occurred on June 28 in the 1300 block of North 9th Street, police said. Vick is being held on a $1 million bond.
According to a probable cause affidavit, witnesses identified Vick as the shooter. Surveillance footage also allegedly shows Vick's vehicle at the scene around the time of the incident. Police recovered multiple shell casings from a 9mm handgun.
Background and Legal Proceedings
Vick played for the Kansas Jayhawks from 2015 to 2019, averaging 10.5 points per game over his college career. He declared for the NBA draft in 2019 but went undrafted. He later played professionally overseas in Israel and Greece.
His attorney, John A. Valdez, stated, "We are aware of the charges and are conducting our own investigation. Mr. Vick maintains his innocence, and we look forward to presenting his side of the story in court." A preliminary hearing is scheduled for August 10.
The victim's family released a statement saying they are "heartbroken and seeking justice for Dominique." The university released a brief statement expressing condolences and noting that Vick is no longer associated with the program.
