DUP Announces Independent Review into Fresh Jeffrey Donaldson Allegations
DUP Orders Review into Fresh Donaldson Allegations

The Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) has announced an independent review following fresh allegations concerning its disgraced former leader, Sir Jeffrey Donaldson, who was recently convicted of 18 sexual offences, including rape, against two women when they were children. The review will probe who knew what regarding inappropriate behaviour by Donaldson before his arrest over historical sex abuse allegations.

Party Leadership Expresses Deep Concern

In a statement released on Friday night, the DUP said its leadership is “deeply concerned” by allegations that have surfaced in recent days. These relate to inappropriate behaviour by Donaldson and indications that some individuals may have had knowledge of such behaviour but never reported it to party officers. The party emphasised that it “acted swiftly” when Donaldson was first charged and believes in the rule of law.

Senior DUP figures have denied any prior knowledge of Donaldson's criminal conduct. Stormont Communities Minister Gordon Lyons described Donaldson as “duplicitous” and stated there was “no inkling” within the party about his propensity for exploitative or abusive behaviour. Education Minister Paul Givan acknowledged rumours but stressed there was no evidence of a criminal nature.

Conviction and Aftermath

On Monday, a jury at Newry Crown Court unanimously found Donaldson, 63, guilty of 18 sexual offences, including one count of rape, against two women. DUP leader Gavin Robinson expressed shock at his predecessor's “filthy and vile” actions. Subsequent media reports, including from BBC Spotlight, have raised questions about how much was known within the DUP about Donaldson's wider conduct prior to his 2024 arrest.

Spotlight reported that some senior DUP figures were aware of another woman who had raised concerns about Donaldson's behaviour but did not wish to make a formal complaint. Additionally, two senior PSNI officers reportedly observed Donaldson entering a sauna in London that marketed itself as a meeting place for gay men in 2006, despite Donaldson referring to homosexuality as “sinful” in the same year.

Independent Review Commissioned

The DUP announced it has commenced the process of commissioning a “specialised and detailed independent review” into issues arising from Donaldson's conviction. Further details are expected shortly. The party stated: “Justice has been served with the guilty verdicts against him.”

Gordon Lyons reiterated the party's stance: “We did not receive any complaints of this nature at all, and if we had, those would have been investigated.” He called for a lengthy sentence to reflect the seriousness of Donaldson's crimes and the trauma inflicted on his victims.

Additional Allegations and Denials

Another issue involves unionist commentator Jamie Bryson, who claimed on BBC's Nolan programme that Donaldson sent him to Dublin to represent the DUP at a meeting with Irish government officials, and that he crafted speeches and policy positions for the former leader. Lyons denied Bryson acted on behalf of the DUP, stating it was not sanctioned and came as a shock to many within the party.

Paul Givan differentiated between crimes against children and rumours about adult behaviour, noting that evidence is crucial. Donaldson's legal representatives have been approached for comment.
