Daughter Recalls Screams After Mum's Body Found in Murder Case

The daughter of a woman killed by her husband has recalled hearing screams after discovering her mother's body. Tracey Davies, 48, was found dead in the bedroom of her home in Cefn Cribwr, near Bridgend, on April 18 last year. Her husband Michael Davies, 57, admits killing her but denies murder, claiming diminished responsibility.

Daughter's Account

Danielle Young, Tracey's daughter, told Newport Crown Court she became worried after her mother failed to pick up her partner for a concert. After the performance, she went to check on her. Before arriving, the defendant's daughter Blythe Hughes-Davies called, asking if she had heard from either Tracey or Michael. Shortly after arriving with a key, another person entered the property and screamed, saying: 'There's a knife.' Tracey was found dead on a bed, while Michael had cuts to his throat and leg and was slumped behind the door.

Background of the Relationship

The court heard from Julie Davies, the defendant's sister, who described the couple's relationship as 'very loving.' They met through a walking club in Porthcawl and had been together for about four years. Tracey visited Michael while he worked in Abu Dhabi and even lived there briefly, but returned due to lack of work. Julie said they 'absolutely adored each other.'

Changes in Behaviour

Blythe Hughes-Davies testified that her father had changed drastically. He usually spent months in Abu Dhabi but made excuses not to see her when home. She described him as 'vacant' and 'like there was a loss of life.' He was normally 'the life and soul of every event,' but had become withdrawn. On April 17, they went for a walk, and he was uncharacteristically quiet. He asked how long medication would take to work. Later, he didn't open a supportive text she sent.

Mental Health Concerns

The court heard that a week before the killing, Michael was sent home from Abu Dhabi on emergency leave after concerns about his mental health. His search history included queries about paranoia, self-care, and jealousy. Tracey told family he had 'some sort of mental breakdown' and was having irrational thoughts.

Tributes

Tracey was described as a 'devoted mother' and an 'extraordinary woman' with 'fierce spirit' and 'boundless compassion.' The trial continues.
