A 35-year-old man arrested on suspicion of assault following an incident during a football match in Porthmadog has been released on bail with conditions, North Wales Police have confirmed.
The incident occurred on Saturday during a match between Trearddur Bay FC and CPD Porthmadog. A video circulating on social media appeared to show a Trearddur Bay player elbowing a Porthmadog player, who then fell to the ground.
District Inspector Iwan Jones said: “I am aware of the video footage of this incident circulating online and thank members of the public for reporting it to us. We are working closely with the victim.” Police are appealing for the person who filmed the video to come forward to provide an evidential statement.
Trearddur Bay FC has named the player alleged to be responsible and confirmed he has been suspended with immediate effect. The club stated it “in no way condones the use of unlawful behaviour by its staff or players”. CPD Porthmadog expressed concern for their player Danny Brookwell, who was concussed and had to leave the field. He is recovering at home.
The Football Association of Wales is also understood to be investigating the matter. Anyone with information is asked to contact North Wales Police on 101, quoting reference 26000046180.
