Jamie Evans, a 20-year-old man from Stone, has been named as the victim of a fatal stabbing on a North Staffordshire street. He was found injured on Orme Road in Newcastle on Friday evening after police were called to a car crash, and later died in hospital. A murder investigation is ongoing.
Staffordshire Police confirmed that two men from Newcastle, aged 20 and 22, have been arrested on suspicion of murder. A 19-year-old, also from Newcastle, has been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to murder.
Emergency response and family tribute
Emergency services were called to the residential road just after 5pm on Friday following reports of a collision between a red Ford Fiesta and a grey Audi. Jamie, the driver of the Ford, was found with injuries deemed consistent with a stab wound. He was taken to hospital, where he sadly passed away.
In a tribute issued through the force over the weekend, his family described him as a 'wonderful son, loving brother and doting uncle' with a 'zest for life'. They said: "Jamie was so passionate about cricket and fitness, enjoying every opportunity to be active, challenge himself and spend time doing the things he loved. These passions reflected his determination, energy and zest for life. Although his life was far too short, the love he gave, the laughter he shared and the memories he created will remain in the hearts of all who knew him."
They added: "He will be deeply loved, profoundly missed and never forgotten. We'd like to thank the members of the public who so kindly went to Jamie's aid and tried to help him."
Cricket community pays tribute
Norton-in-Hales Cricket Club said that Jamie, a former player, had spent much of his childhood at Bearstone Road watching his dad, who would spend hours after the game helping him learn about the sport. The club, on the Staffordshire and Shropshire border, described him as an 'exceptionally talented' cricketer.
A post on the club's Facebook page said: "The club are deeply saddened to hear the heartbreaking news of the passing of former player Jamie Evans. Jamie started his cricket in the 2nd XI alongside his dad before making his 1st XI debut at just 14 years of age. Even at such a young age, Jamie's talent was clear for all to see. His wicketkeeping was already amongst the best in the league, and in his first season in the 1st XI he finished second in the league for dismissals by a wicketkeeper."
The post continued: "His career continued to go from strength to strength, including scoring his first 1st XI century at just 16 years old. Jamie was an exceptionally talented cricketer, but above all, he was a lovely lad and a great friend to so many people within the club. To lose someone so young is incredibly difficult to comprehend, and Jamie will be sadly missed by everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him and sharing a cricket field with him."
Stone SP Cricket Club also paid tribute, saying: "Living locally, Jamie had many friends at the club and also shared the cricket field with several of our current players whilst representing Staffordshire Cricket. He will be remembered as a talented wicketkeeper and, more importantly, a lovely lad. Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with Jamie's family and friends at this incredibly difficult time. Rest peacefully, Jamie."
Investigation continues
Detectives are believed to have spent the weekend questioning the three suspects in custody. Speaking at the weekend, Detective Inspector Gina Pope said: "Our investigation continues to move at pace. Officers are still in the area tonight carrying out enquiries to understand more about what happened and to provide reassurance to the local community. I want to thank everyone who has been in touch with information and I'd ask anyone who hasn't already contacted us that might be able to help us with our enquiries to come forward."
