Freya MacLean, a 19-year-old university student and dancer, has died after getting into difficulty in the water at the Falls of Falloch, a scenic beauty spot near Stirling, Scotland. Her body was recovered on Saturday morning following an emergency response that began on Friday night.
Heartbreaking Tribute from Parents
Freya's parents, Samantha and Ruaraidh, paid tribute to their daughter on Tuesday, describing her as a 'truly beautiful soul.' In a statement to the Daily Record, they said: 'Beloved by family, friends and the wider community, Freya was a truly beautiful soul whose kindness knew no bounds.'
They added: 'Her warm smile, infectious laughter and caring heart brought comfort and joy to everyone she met. Always generous with her time, she was the friend people turned to, offering unwavering support, encouragement and compassion.'
The family asked for privacy and expressed gratitude for the support they have received. 'The world is a little less bright without her, but infinitely better because she was in it,' they said.
Incident Details and Investigation
Police Scotland received reports of a woman in difficulty in the water at around 10:45pm on Friday, July 10. A search operation was launched, and Freya's body was discovered at approximately 11:45am on Saturday. A Police Scotland spokesperson said: 'The death is being treated as unexplained, but there are no apparent suspicious circumstances.'
Community and Dance Academy Response
Freya was a student of primary education at Glasgow University and a member of the JC Dance and Cheer Academy, where she was known as a 'Glitter Girl.' The academy launched a GoFundMe page to help cover unexpected costs for the family, raising nearly £2,000 so far.
Organisers Charlene McDonald and Laura-Jane Gelston wrote: 'As you may have heard, we have tragically lost our beautiful Glitter Girl Freya in a tragic accident. Freya truly made such a huge impact on all of our girls. She was truly special and made everyone feel like a friend.'
They continued: 'She had the most infectious personality, a heart full of kindness and was supportive to everyone. She never passed anyone without giving them the warmest smile and was always so cheerful, full of life, and a joy to be around.'
Legacy of Kindness
Freya's parents concluded their tribute by saying: 'Though her time with us was far too short, her legacy of kindness and love will live on forever.' The dance academy echoed this sentiment, stating that Freya will be remembered as 'colourful and full of life.'
