Gardai have renewed an appeal for help to catch the killer of a young mother who was murdered after attending a David Bowie concert at Slane Castle 39 years ago. Antoinette Smith, a 27-year-old mother of two, disappeared after she and a friend attended the concert in Co Meath on Saturday, July 11, 1987. Her remains were found nine months later in a drain on Glendoo Mountain in Co Wicklow.
Events of the Night
After the concert, Smith and her friend returned to Dublin by bus, arriving at Parnell Square around 11pm. They went to the nearby La Mirage Discotheque, where they met two men they knew. They stayed in their company until they all left shortly after 2am. Smith’s friend parted company with the other three after leaving the club, while Smith and the two men remained for some time before walking to a taxi rank on O’Connell Street.
Gardai said the men got a taxi to the Ballymun area, while Smith continued walking by the Gresham Hotel on O’Connell Street towards O’Connell Street Bridge. She was subsequently reported missing by her husband.
Impact on Family
Smith’s children, Lisa and Rachel, were aged seven and four respectively when their mother disappeared. The renewed appeal comes on the anniversary of her disappearance, with Gardai at Bray Garda Station urging anyone with information to come forward. They noted that relationships and associations people may have had decades ago could now have changed, potentially encouraging witnesses to speak.
Gardai said they would treat anyone assisting the investigation in a “sensitive” manner. Anyone with information is asked to contact Bray Garda Station.
