Thames Valley Police have launched a head-scratching investigation into an unexplained death after a report of a body near a major road turned into a bizarre mystery when the corpse allegedly vanished before officers could reach the scene.
The force was called to the A420 near the village of Buckland in Oxfordshire shortly after 7:30am on Tuesday following a report from a member of the public. The caller reported discovering the body of a man, described as having a 'very gentle face', in a field adjacent to the busy roadway.
A Corpse That Disappeared
In a turn of events more akin to a crime thriller than a real-life police log, upon arrival, officers could find no trace of the body. A thorough search of the area, including the deployment of the police helicopter, failed to locate the man or any evidence to corroborate the initial report.
The original caller has since been spoken to by detectives, who are treating the incident as an unexplained death despite the lack of physical evidence. Investigators are now faced with a perplexing puzzle: did the body ever exist, or was the report a tragic misunderstanding?
Appeal for Information
Police are urgently appealing for information, particularly from any motorists who may have dashcam footage of the area between 6:30am and 8:00am on Tuesday morning. They are also keen to speak to anyone who may have been travelling on the A420 and witnessed anything unusual.
A spokesperson for Thames Valley Police stated: 'We are conducting extensive enquiries to establish the exact circumstances of this incident. We would urge anyone with information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, to come forward and assist with our investigation.'
The case remains open, with officers determined to solve the mystery of the vanishing body on the A420.
