The teenage boy who tragically died in a reservoir during the recent heatwave has been named as 15-year-old Brodie Loughman. His body was recovered from Cowbury Reservoir, in the Stalybridge area of Tameside, on the evening of Saturday, June 27.
Emergency Response and Investigation
Greater Manchester Police stated that emergency services were called to reports of a boy getting into difficulty in the water at around 6.30pm that night. An inquest into Brodie's death has been listed to be opened and adjourned on Wednesday at South Manchester Coroners' Court in Stockport. The death is not being treated by police as suspicious.
Police Warning on Open Water Dangers
Speaking at the time, Chief Inspector Helen Baxter described the incident as 'nothing short of devastating'. 'We are confident that there are no suspicious circumstances and that this is such a sad reminder of the dangers of entering open water,' she said. 'We remind the public to please avoid being tempted to cool off in reservoirs, rivers, canals or ponds. We all want to enjoy the warm weather; please make sure you do so in a safe way.'
Same Weekend Saw Another Teenage Death
The tragedy happened on the same weekend as an 18-year-old boy lost his life after getting into difficulty in the River Irwell at Clifton Country Park in Salford. Leon Pafu Ngoy was named as his devastated family released a touching tribute. The teenager, who was with friends at the time, had just completed his GCSE exams and was 'excited' about his future. 'If Leon could speak to others today, we believe he would have one important message: no matter how safe the water may look, it is never worth taking the risk,' said his family in a statement released by Greater Manchester Police. Emergency services launched a major search operation, with his body found the following Monday.
Renewed Calls for Water Safety
On the same weekend, a woman in her 60s also died in the water in Bury. The deaths sparked renewed calls from emergency services leaders about the dangers posed by open water. The incidents serve as a stark reminder of the risks associated with swimming in reservoirs, rivers, and other open water bodies, especially during warm weather.
