A major UK airline has been compelled to suspend all its flights between London and Cornwall as the ongoing fuel crisis, triggered by the war in the Middle East, continues to escalate. Skybus has announced the immediate cancellation of its services linking London Gatwick Airport with Newquay in Cornwall, effective from Friday, April 3, 2026.
Economic and Environmental Pressures Force Shutdown
The decision stems from a dual challenge: skyrocketing global fuel prices following the conflict in the Gulf region and a sharp decline in passenger bookings. This combination has rendered the route financially unsustainable for the airline.
Skybus managing director Jonathan Hinkles explained, "The enormous surge in global fuel costs due to the Gulf conflict, along with a substantial drop in new passenger reservations since mid-February's announcement about the planned closure of the Public Service Obligation (PSO) air route, creates an insurmountable obstacle to continuing operations through April and May."
Earlier Cessation of Services
In an earlier statement, Skybus indicated that services would cease sooner than initially planned. "In view of circumstances beyond our control, Skybus has advised Cornwall Council that services will now end earlier. The final flights in each direction will operate on Thursday, April 2, 2026," the airline stated.
The carrier is now proactively contacting all customers with bookings for April and May to inform them that their flights will no longer proceed as scheduled.
Background and Context of the Route
Skybus had been operating daily flights between London Gatwick and Newquay since November 2025. This service was initiated after Eastern Airways, which previously operated the same route, entered administration, leaving a gap in regional air connectivity.
Environmental and Economic Considerations
Hinkles further emphasized the broader implications, noting, "During a period of significant economic uncertainty and global efforts to conserve energy, it is neither environmentally responsible nor economically viable for us to continue flying with drastically reduced passenger numbers."
The airline expressed gratitude to all stakeholders, including passengers, local partners, and team members, for their support during the recent months of service provision on the Cornwall-London air route.
This development highlights the far-reaching impact of geopolitical conflicts on regional aviation, particularly affecting routes dependent on consistent passenger demand and stable fuel prices. The cancellation underscores the vulnerability of air travel services to external economic shocks and shifting market conditions.
