Two devoted mothers from Leicester were among three people killed in a devastating early-hours collision on the A46 earlier this month. The community is in mourning following the incident, which occurred on the citybound carriageway between Thrussington and Sileby.
Tragic Details of the Fatal Collision
Leicestershire Police were called to the scene at 1.01am on Saturday, December 13. The collision involved a blue BMW 5 Series which left the road. The vehicle had been travelling from Nottingham on the A46.
Inside the car were four people. Tragically, three lost their lives. The two women who have been publicly named are both 42-year-olds from Leicester: Neeru Patel and Bhamini Karsan. The identity of the third woman who died has not been released at the request of her family.
A fourth occupant, also a woman, sustained minor injuries and was the person who alerted the emergency services.
Families Pay Heartbreaking Tribute
The families of the two named victims have released moving statements and photographs through the police, celebrating their lives and asking for privacy.
Neeru Patel's family described her as a woman whose life was "rooted in love, compassion and quiet faith." They said she was devoted above all to her family and to caring for others, leaving behind two children. "Her gentle spirit and selfless kindness touched many within their world," they added.
Bhamini Karsan's family remembered her as a loving and devoted mother, wife and daughter. They spoke of her "warm and bubbly personality" and her kindness, saying she was "deeply loved by her family and cherished by friends and the wider community."
Police Investigation and Appeal
Detectives from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit have been conducting a thorough investigation. A 37-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. She has been released from custody under investigation as inquiries continue.
DC Madeleine Hayes confirmed officers had worked extensively at the scene. She issued a direct appeal to the public: "We are urging anyone who was driving in the area around that time, who may have witnessed events leading up to the collision, to come forward."
Police are particularly keen for motorists to review any dashcam footage they may have recorded on the A46 between 12.30am and 1.05am on December 13.
